"Under Sekhmet's Breath" revealed

Here's the cover artwork for the new AMARNA SKY album, entitled “Under Sekhmet’s Breath”, scheduled to be released on December 19, via Anubis Music. The effort will be available for sale in digital and physical formats. The physical copies will have a 16-page booklet filled with spectacular artwork by the Brazilian artist Alcides Burn, band pictures and lyrics. Alcides Burn has worked with bands like EXECUTER, TORTURE SQUAD, MALEFECTOR, DISGRACE AND TERROR, ANUBIS, etc.

The band now features the addition of the haunting female vocals of Aziza A. Poggi from the american prog metal band DENDURA and the special guests V. Santura (TRIPTYKON, DARK FORTRESS) and Karl Sanders (NILE).

Others guest musicians to appear on the upcomig release are: Nacho Hernándes, multi-instrumentalist of the spanish band VIHMANA (a death/doom project with gothic, ambient and ethnic music influences) and vocalist of the death/doom band LaDOLOROSA, composer of the instrumental interlude on the track "Inseparable In Death"; Wilmar Taal, who is releasing the first album with his eletronic project DEAD ROMERO, called "Rite" (with a guest performance by Erol Unala from APOLLYON SUN & CELTIC FROST), and plays bass on the track "Sekhmet's Breath"; and Marcos Jabah from the brazilian power metal band NECKBREAKER, who sings on the track "Fiery Embrace".

The album still features a version for an unreleased CELTIC FROST song from 1992, originally written by Tom Gabriel Warrior and Curt Victor Bryant, with totally rewritten lyrics to fit better in the concept of the new album. This song is now called "Sekhmet's Breath", featuring V. Santura, who has played in the last incarnation of CELTIC FROST and now is a member of TRIPTYKON, on lead guitars.

And finally Karl Sanders of NILE appears on lead guitars on a new version of "Beyond The Horizon", with fresh vocals by Aziza A. Poggi and re-recorded drums.

Victor Bullok (a.k.a. V. Santura), guitarist for such bands as TRIPTYKON, DARK FORTRESS and NONEUCLID, will guest on the forthcoming album from the Egyptian-themed Brazilian doom metal band AMARNA SKY. Entitled "Under Sekhmet's Breath", the CD will be, according to mainman Deni Deathnoise, "heavier, more technical and aggressive" than AMARNA SKY's debut, "Rising Heresy". Other guest musicians schedules to appear on the album are Aziza A. Poggi, frontwoman of American prog-metal act DENDURA, and NILE's Karl Sanders. Songtitles set to appear on the effort include "Liturgy Of Power", "Temple Of Iconoclast", "Pain Empire" and "The Last Scribe".

V. Santura, TRIPTYKON, DARK FORTRESS and NONEUCLID guitarist, is another special guest invited to appear on the second AMARNA SKY album, scheduled to be released on the first semester of 2011. Together we will cover an unreleased CELTIC FROST song from 1992, originally called "Honor Thy Father". The lyrics of the song were totally rewritten by me and now it's called "Sekhmet's Breath".

Besides V. Santura, the new album will feature on several tracks the voice of Aziza A. Poggi, frontwoman of American Prog Metal DENDURA, that recently has opened the shows for EPICA, as well the presence of NILE's Karl Sanders. I can say that the new album is heavier, more technical and aggressive than our debut "Rising Heresy". Some songs titles are: "Liturgy of Power", "Temple of Iconoclast", "Pain Empire" and "The Last Scribe". Complete track list and artwork to be revealed very soon.

NILE Mainman Featured On AMARNA SKY Track - Published on Blabbermouth

NILE mainman Karl Sanders has helped mix a new version of the song "Beyond The Horizon" that will be featured on the next full-length album from the Egyptian-themed Brazilian doom metal band AMARNA SKY. Making a guest appearance on vocals on this new version of the track is Aziza A. Poggi, the frontwoman of the American progressive metal band DENDURA.

"Beyond The Horizon" features Karl Sanders on lead guitar. Sanders is tentatively due to appear on another track on the second AMARNA SKY album, which is expected to be released later in the year. The follow-up to AMARNA SKY debut, "Rising Heresy", has working title of "Civilized Rapture", although a number of other possibilities are being considered, including "Wine For Sekhmet".

This is a weird sort of Doom album from a band I had not heard of. Amarna Sky are from Brazil, partaking of the small but excellent South American Doom tradition. Rising Heresy is an odd kind of combination of riffing that switches between Doomy and groovy, mideast influence, and vocals that range from death-style grunts and a Lou Reed kind of intonation. The music on here is actually really good, with catchy hooks and a lot of melody, making the music really memorable. I don't always like the vocals, as sometimes they veer into a kind of half-growl/half-mumble that sounds kind of like a muppet. But still, the music is catchy and heavy enough to override any such complaints. This is an indie release, as far as I can tell, and so is likely hard to find, but fans of more accessible Doom or even atmospheric music like Karl Sander's solo works should find reasons enough to look.

Gli Amarna Sky sono un progetto del musicista brasiliano Deni G. Pierroni . 'Rising Heresy' è il debut album, edito da Anubis Music nel 2006. Il disco ci porta nell'atmosfera eterna, sabbiosa e misteriosa dell'antico Egitto, in cui i Faraoni regnavano e le loro monumentali opere architettoniche davano l'idea della potenza di questi regnanti. Il doom progressivo sprigionato dagli Amarna Sky, mischiato con echi musicali tradizionali egizi, ci dà una dimensione vivida ma al tempo stesso sognante del sound della band. Canzoni dall'incedere lento, con chitarre ruvide e dai riff ripetuti ed ossessivi, una batteria dal feeling marziale ed un songwriting pulito e lineare fanno di 'Rising Heresy' un prodotto degno di interesse e capace di suscitare nell'animo dell'ascoltatore sensazioni anche contrastanti fra loro. Naturalmente le undici tracce vanno metabolizzate per bene, in modo da eliminare quella difficoltà iniziale che alcuni fruitori musicali potrebbero incontrare: in cambio della pazienza, però, si avranno in cambio idee ben ideate e strutturate e messe in musica in modo discreto. La produzione è buona mentre la cover è opera dell'onnipresente Mattias Norén, grande e ricercato artista: in definitiva ci troviamo di fronte ad un debut con delle carte in regola per fare bene, vediamo cosa il futuro riserverà a Deni e Aldo...
Un buon disco che segna il debutto di un progetto interessante. Se son rose fioriranno...

Ok, if we should situate the stylistic base in some point, then we say that the root of the sound of this surprising Amarna Sky is the Doom Metal. But, following the example of other bands that has deed of this style a than more evolved in the last years (removing him of the apparent dead end where was found in the beginning of the decade), in Rising Heresy the thing goes beyond than traditionally we wait of the genre.

It celebrated pair of musicians (we are speaking of a national band here), still count with some special participations of weight, made by musicians of renown in the international setting, to knowledge: Karl Sanders and Erol Unala. But it is not then that arise the merits of Deni & Aldo, of course. A precise and detailed instrumental, clean and introspective vocals, beyond a proposal - fortunately - eccentric, constitute the registered trademark here.

The rhythmic and introspective climate of the compositions remits us, as already said, to the Doom. However, such "climate" is the only bond, and the experimentalism reigns during all the album, bringing also strong connection with the Prog. But the ingredients not pairs thereabouts. It would be able to be said that we have here an Avantgard Metal with references Doom/Folk/Ambient/Prog/Epic, more or less in the line in that acts the big Summoning. The difference is that, in Rising Heresy, the (strong) baroque inclinations remit to the Egyptian folklore.

More than inclinations, goes. The old Egyptian culture consists, in fact, in the nucleus of all the thematic inspiration and full spring of the present exotic elements in the sound of the Amarna Sky - fact that generates several deliciously unusual passages. A big revelation of the Brazilian setting!

Ok, se temos que situar a base estilística em algum ponto, então digamos que a raiz do som deste surpreendente Amarna Sky é o Doom Metal. Mas, a exemplo de outras bandas que tem feito deste estilo um dos que mais evoluíram no últimos anos (tirando-o do aparente beco sem saída onde se encontrava no início da década), em Rising Heresy a coisa vai além do que tradicionalmente se espera do gênero.

A festejada dupla de músicos (estamos falando de uma banda nacional aqui), ainda conta com algumas participações especiais de peso, feitas por músicos de renome no cenário internacional, a saber: Karl Sanders e Erol Unala. Mas não é daí que surgem os méritos de Deni & Aldo, claro. Um instrumental preciso e detalhado, vocais limpos e introspectivos, além de uma proposta - felizmente - excêntrica, constituem a marca registrada por aqui.

O clima introspectivo e cadenciado das composições nos remete, como já dito, ao Doom. Entretanto, tal "clima" é o único vínculo, e o experimentalismo impera ao longo de todo o play, trazendo também forte conexão com o Prog. Mas os ingredientes não param por aí. Poderia-se dizer que temos aqui um Avantgard Metal com referências Doom/Folk/Ambient/Prog/Epic, mais ou menos na linha em que atua o grande Summoning. A diferença é que, em Rising Heresy, as (fortes) inclinações barrocas remetem ao folclore egípcio.

Mais que inclinações, vai. A cultura egípcia antiga consiste, na verdade, no núcleo de toda a inspiração temática e fonte plena dos elementos exóticos presentes no som do Amarna Sky - fato que gera várias passagens deliciosamente inusitadas. Uma grande revelação do cenário tupiniquim!

This rather obscure twain-project (bandfounder Deni G. Perrioni, ex-Deep Sorrow, does both sing and play the drums, while producer Aldo D’Isep plays guitar, bass, and keys) has „Egyptian Themed Doom Metal“ written on its banner. To be sure, Egyptian influences are not new in (Doom) Metal: Solitude Aeturnus, Nile or Melechesh have been experimenting with Sumerian-Egyptian scales or melodies for quite a while. The instrumentation of the songs sometimes sounds as if John Perez had put his signature to Nile’s more doomy compositions, such as „Sarcophagus“ (listen to „Eclipsed Spirituality“ oder „Genemesis“). Not surprisingly, then, the six-string extravaganza of Nile-mastermind Karl Sanders can be heard on „Beyond the Horizon (Legacy of Light).“ A guest-appearance by Erol Unala (ex-Celtic Frost and -Apollyon Sun) likewise speaks volumes about the band’s influences (titletrack or „Blind Row“). Sometimes the not too easily accessible songs, most often thicker than the Nile, are counterbalanced by belligerent soundscapes („Per Aten“ und „Femininity’s Pride“) which invest „Rising Heresy“ with an almost mystic note. The album’s climax is, without the shadow of a doubt, the relentlessly grooving „Divine Glory,“ a song that highlights the Power Doom-component in the sound of Amarna Sky. Mattias Norén having created the artwork of this nicely produced debut means: no worries here. All this means that Amarna Sky have made a promising impact in the Doom-world as „Rising Heresy“ presents multiple beautiful, atmospherically charged moments for Doomheads. The Neckbreaker´s vocalist Marcos "Jabah" was the last musician to be invited to appear on the debut Amarna Sky album "Rising Heresy", which the releasing date was changed to the first fortnight of December. "Jabah", that also is an old friend of mine, already worked with me in the past in a band called Deep Sorrow. In this first Amarna Sky work he sung on the song "Divine Glory" (the second part of "Cleopatra VII"). Here are two pics of his sessions at the HP Records Studio.

Karl Sanders (photo), guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, leader and mastermind of the American Death Metal Legend Nile, is the second special guest to appear on the Amarna Sky album, with releasing date to October/November of this year. Karl will play on the song "Beyond The Horizon (Legacy Of Light)".

It´s the name of the instrumental track that began to be record yesterday at the HP Records studio and that will be the second part of "Amarna Rising". This way, the title track "Rising Heresy" dislocated off to the third part of the "history", which was mixed on last week, including the Erol Unala´s guitar leads, first special guest to appear on the Amarna Sky recordings.

"Nefertiti´s Pillars" was born from a lot tribal groove that came to my mind, while I was sat down at my kit, take care the drums tuning, especially the tons. Aldo added to it some hypnotic riffs of oriental scale and the result was very interesting... On next week we should finish it...

Erol Unala (photo), Celtic Frost´s guitarist/songwritter, will be one of the special guests to appear on the first Amarna Sky album, in recordings process.
Erol began to work with Tom Gabriel Fischer in Apollyon Sun, band that the double founded in 1996 and that released the EP "God Leaves (And Dies)" in 1998 and the "Sub" album in 2000. Erol told me that the return album of Celtic Frost was fully recorded, with release date in May/2006.
In Amarna Sky Erol will appear on the album title track "Rising Heresy", with release date in the second semester of 2006.
Amarna Sky also have the contribuition of Aldo D´Isep on guitars, bass and keyboards, who´s the responsible by the album production, what´s being recorded in his own studio, the HP Records. The drums, percussion and vocals, as well the songwritting (music and lyrics) are under the responsibility of the writer of this blog.

"Rising Heresy" & "Per Aten"

Cerca de 90% das gravações de "Rising Heresy", segunda parte da conceitual “Amarna Rising”, foram concluídas na tarde de ontem no estúdio HP Records. Somente os solos de guitarra ainda não foram gravados pelo Aldo, o que deverá acontecer na próxima semana, bem como a inclusão de eventuais teclados, que estamos ainda experimentando... Provavelmente essa é a música que dará título ao álbum.
Ainda ontem começamos também a gravar a terceira faixa e penúltima parte do épico, chamada "Per Aten", que é um tanto complexa por ter uma instrumentação bastante diversa e os mais variados tipos de percussão. Na verdade essa é uma faixa quase que totalmente instrumental, que contará apenas com vozes declamando específicos extratos retirados do poema chamado “Hino a Aton”, escrito pelo próprio Akhenaton.

A união com Brahma

Tendo dois brahmanes perguntado a Siddhartha qual o verdadeiro caminho para chegar à união com Brahma, respondeu o Buda:
- Qualquer dentre os brahmanes versados no estudo dos Vedas já viu Brahma face a face?
- Não, responderam os dois brahmanes.
- Mas algum mestre versado no estudo dos Vedas, ou qualquer dos autores dos Vedas, já viu Brahma face a face?
- Não, responderam os brahmanes novamente.
- Então, acaso deveriam dizer os brahmanes: “Indicamos o caminho para chegar à união com aquilo que não conhecemos, que nunca vimos?” Se tal é a substância da tradição dos brahmanes, bem vã é a sua missão. É exatamente como uma fila de cegos agarrados uns aos outros: o primeiro não vê, o do meio não vê, os últimos não podem ver.
Imaginai agora que um homem chega à margem deste rio e quer atravessá-lo. Julgais que se ele rogasse à outra margem que se aproximasse dele, ela, com efeito, viria por virtude de suas orações? É isso, no entanto, o que fazem os brahmanes. Under The First Eclipse & Eclipsed Spirituality

A mixagem de “Eclipsed Spirituality” foi concluída na madrugada de ontem no estúdio HP Records, onde Aldo e eu aproveitamos para gravar uma introdução para a nossa primeira música gravada juntos. A intro foi batizada de “Under The First Eclipse”. E posso garantir que o trabalho de produção e mixagem realizado pelo Aldo, após uma grande troca de idéias nossas, foi realmente fantástico! Estou ansioso para que as pessoas possam ouvir nossa música. Por isso, já se encontra em construção o site oficial da banda, que em breve estará disponível, provavelmente com alguma faixa para download.

Existe uma curiosidade muito interessante sobre a letra de “Eclipsed Spirituality”, que gostaria de contar, já que é algo que me deixa muito lisonjeado e orgulhoso ao mesmo tempo. No final do ano passado, quando eu ainda estava no processo de composição dessa música, encaminhei um rascunho da letra, que ainda não tinha um título definido (Amarna Rising pt. 1 era só o que constava na época), para o Karl Sanders, da banda de Death Metal americana Nile, já que nos comunicamos frequentemente por e-mail. A letra trata de um dos episódios mais desconcertantes, polêmicos e importantes da história do Egito Antigo: o período Amarniano, quando o faraó Amenophis IV, que mudou o seu nome para Akhenaton (ou Akhenaten), subiu ao trono e introduziu diversas reformas na religião, arte e política naquele país – uma verdadeira revolução.
E o Karl me disse que por anos os fãs do Nile, entre os quais estou incluído, lhe pediam para que ele escrevesse uma canção sobre Akhenaton, mas que nunca antes havia realmente pensado em fazê-la, devido a existência da famosa ópera de Philip Glass e que não sabia como lidar com o assunto dentro do contexto Death Metal do Nile.
Bem, passado uns dois meses, Karl declarou que tinha escrito uma canção sobre Akhenaton e que a mesma levaria o título de “Cast Down The Heretic”. Logo em seguida e para a minha surpresa, numa entrevista concedida por ele, semanas antes do lançamento do álbum “Annihilation Of the Wicked”, ocorrido em 24 de maio deste ano, quando indagado sobre uma canção que falava sobre o citado faraó no novo álbum do Nile, Karl disse que só após ter lido aquele rascunho, que eu lhe enviara, é que ele teve uma luminosa inspiração de como deveria compor tal música, em virtude da maneira bastante incomum com que tratei e escrevi sobre o tema... E essa explanação do Karl pode ser vista no encarte do último álbum do Nile, onde ele também me agradece por diversas outras inspirações – estas certamente por causa de alguns CDs, com os mais diversos estilos de música, incluindo bastante música árabe, que lhe enviei no início do ano. Por todos esses acontecimentos é que a satisfação que sinto é realmente grande, considerando ainda que o Nile é um dos maiores ícones do Death Metal contemporâneo e seu líder, Karl Sanders, um profundo conhecedor da história egípcia.
Mas apesar de “Eclipsed Spirituality” e “Cast Down The Heretic” tratarem do mesmo período da história do Egito Antigo, elas se diferem totalmente no contexto e sobre o ponto de vista. Na letra que escrevi, o fato é visto através dos olhos do próprio Akhenaton, enquanto que na do Karl, através dos olhos raivosos dos sacerdotes do clero de Amon-Rá. E é claro que ambas também têm perspectivas e visões muito pessoais sobre o acontecimento... Musicalmente as duas faixas não têm quase nada em comum, exceto que ambas são muito pesadas.

A foto acima mostra a Edição Especial de Colecionador do mais recente álbum do Nile “Annihilation Of The Wicked”, limitada em 5000 cópias, já esgotada. Mas o álbum ainda está disponível em CD na versão digipack e em vinil duplo.

Voltando ao Amarna Sky, estamos no momento finalizando os arranjos da próxima faixa a ser gravada. Dia 30 retornaremos ao estúdio HP Records para dar continuidade às sessões...

Amarna Sky

Amarna Sky é o nome do projeto que está sendo criado pelo escritor deste blog, juntamente com Aldo D´Isep, músico, produtor e proprietário do conceituado estúdio HP Records. A proposta do projeto é fazer música pesada, intensa, mas também sem medo de experimentações e sem ficar restrito a rótulos. Alguns amigos que já ouviram um pouco do nosso material acham que temos uma levada doom, com a opressão rítmica herdada do industrial, alguns toques de metal tradicional e até pitadas de rock progressivo... Aliado a tudo isso, pretendemos fundir o peso do metal com a diversidade da música étnica (árabe, marroquina, indiana, etc.), que achamos muito rica, exótica, mística e que tem muita relação com o nome do projeto, bem como com nossa temática. Aldo é o responsável pelas guitarras, baixo e teclados e eu pela bateria, percussões diversas e vocais, bem como pelas composições e letras, as quais continuo escrevendo. Apesar de sermos músicos de longa data, Aldo e eu nunca tocamos juntos. E é por esse motivo que acho ainda mais incrível todo o entrosamento e química que tem rolado no estúdio! Além de grande músico, o Aldo consegue captar facilmente a aura de uma canção e traduzir todo o sentimento dela em notas, tornando menos árduo o nosso processo de composição. Confesso que o meu perfeccionismo, às vezes, pode até irritar as pessoas... Por isso, desde já, agradeço ao Aldo pela paciência que tem tido comigo... E, após trocarmos várias idéias a respeito do projeto, decidimos gravar um CD independente, que poderá ser um álbum ou um mini-álbum, dependendo do que irá acontecer no estúdio HP Records nas próximas semanas ou meses de gravação! E se algum selo se interessar pela nossa música, melhor ainda. No último dia 11 finalizamos a gravação da faixa “Eclipsed Spirituality”, que na verdade trata-se da primeira parte de um épico conceitual dividido em quatro partes, intitulado “Amarna Rising”, que acabei de escrever no final de julho. Na semana que vêm faremos a mixagem da mesma, bem como começaremos os preparativos para a gravação da próxima música e segunda parte do épico, chamada “Rising Heresy”. Agradecimentos especiais ao Richard e a todos da Meinl Cymbals (USA) pelo pronto atendimento e cortesia. Pra quem não sabe ou ainda não viu, a primeira “aparição” do Amarna Sky ocorreu no tributo aos suíços do Celtic Frost, chamado de “Homage to Celtic Frost”, que está disponível no site oficial da banda (http://www.celticfrost.com/) desde abril deste ano. O cover gravado pelo Amarna Sky leva o nome de “Pandemonium/Phallic Tantrum” e contou com a participação de Valdyr Daldon Jr. nas guitarras e baixo, sendo que a bateria, derbak e vocais ficaram sob minha responsabilidade. Valdyr além de músico, é jornalista e um grande amigo. Quero deixar registrado aqui a minha “mega” gratidão ao “Dardão” (como também é conhecido), que não pensou duas vezes quando convidado para participar do evento. Vale lembrar que o Amarna Sky foi a única banda/projeto do Brasil a participar desse tributo, que contou com a colaboração de fãs e músicos dos Estados Unidos e de vários países da Europa. Ao lado da minha foto estão outras duas feitas especialmente para o tributo, nas quais “Dardão” aparece com a camiseta do AC/DC e eu com a da Meinl, na primeira encarnação do Amarna Sky. Agradecimentos mais do que especiais ao Vinicius Mariano da Valhalla Metal Magazine pela grande força que nos deu na divulgação desse tributo e pelo interesse que demonstrou pelo Amarna Sky, conforme matéria publicada na edição nº 32 dessa mais do que histórica revista.
